With Valentine's Day around the corner, need we remind you to get sweets for your Sweet? We didn't think so. But, in case you're looking for an interesting alternative, why not try ORGANIC goodies? Not possible? Think again. And hey, it might just make you think about getting goodies EVERY DAY of the year. Colleen Ellse, creator and baking guru of these delicious desserts gives us the inside "scoop" on her unique baking business.
How/why did you start Bumbleberry Baking?
I started Bumbleberry Baking Co. after a change in employment. After being a graphic designer for 3 years, I needed to decide exactly where I wanted my career and life paths to go. After a lot of “soul searching” and heavy thinking, looking at what I loved to do, what I felt my strengths were, and what experience I could take out of my last job at a small business, I decided that organic baking was something I was going to invest myself in. I knew that with my background, I had the opportunity to create a successful brand with great customer service, not to mention delicious baked goods!
What sorts of products can be found at your baking company?
We offer organic scones, muffins, and cookies. We offer traditional favorites such as Chocolate Chunk Cookies and Buttermilk Blueberry Muffins, and we also offer seasonal items such as Oatmeal Pumpkin Muffins and Strawberry Sugar Valentine Cookies.
Do you have a favorite product or products?
For my favorite muffin, it’s hands down the Oatmeal Pumpkin Muffin. I thought I didn’t like pumpkin until I tasted it! My favorite cookie is probably the Molasses Spice, which is perfect with a hot cup of English Breakfast tea. And I really love the traditional English Scones, served toasted warm with cream and jam.
What is a typical day like, making sweets?
A typical day for me is starting my day with baking any orders that have recently come in, so everything has cooled sufficiently and there’s still plenty time to package and ship. After every order has been baked and shipped, there’s always lots of admin work that comes with the business. Communicating with buyers about their orders, answering emails, promoting my business and reaching out to other small business owners online, making sure the bookkeeping is kept in order... there’s a fair amount that needs to be down out of the kitchen actually.
What is your hope for your business?
My hope and goal for Bumbleberry is for people to really love organic baked goods. I’d like people to know that not only is organic a better option, but I want Bumbleberry to be known for great food period. Our products are really special in the edible market because we always bake in small batches with the best organic ingredients. Not to mention we put a lot of love into every order!
